IS GOD A SADIST?

The Rev. Robert Eddy Posted on May 9, 2016 by Bob EddyApril 21, 2025

The current (May 2016) conflagration in Canada that is destroying hundreds of homes and many square miles of forest brought to my mind a sermon I wrote the day after Hurricane Ivan hit Pensacola. Such “acts of God” often evoke the question of how a God which would inflict such pain could be considered a loving god – as Jesus of Nazareth taught and most Christians believe. Though 15 years old, this is still my answer to the question.

SINGING THE LIVING TRADITION

The Rev. Robert Eddy Posted on November 15, 2015 by Bob EddyApril 21, 2025

Unitarians and Universalists have been singing hymns since their origins in the 16th century. Our Hymnal, first published in 1993, contains a multitude of hymns from as early as 850 of the common era, to 1992. One can trace the development (or degeneration) of UUism by selecting from those hymns. All texts are copyrighted by the Unitarian Universalist Association.

MALCOLM, MARTIN AND THE CARE OF SOULS

The Rev. Robert Eddy Posted on January 2, 2015 by Bob EddyApril 21, 2025

Malcolm and Martin were not friends. They seemed the antithesis of one another yet they shared more than they realized. Both were sons of Baptist ministers – but Martin’s Father “knew his place”. It was a privileged place – as privileged as that of any “black” Man in Atlanta during Martin’s childhood. Malcolm’s father was different; a “rabble rouser”’ an “uppety “black”” who didn’t “know his place.” And he – Malcolm’s father – was murdered for his refusal to “keep his place” in a Michigan that hypocritically prided itself on it’s role in the war to “free the slaves”. …

THE VIAGRA METHOD OF CHURCH FUNDING or You can be good for nothing but …”

The Rev. Robert Eddy Posted on May 11, 2014 by Bob EddyApril 21, 2025

Religious communities cover an unimaginable spectrum of beliefs, rituals, and customs but they all have one thing in common: fund raising! In this lighthearted sampling of methods of “paying the bills” I examineI eight that I have observed:
The Commune Method, The Bake Sale Method, The Entrepreneurial Method, The Mystic Society method, The Holiness method, The Mafia Method, The Forbes Method and finally the Viagra Method. And, of course I end with a recommendation.

LIVING OUR TRUTHS IN LOVE

The Rev. Robert Eddy Posted on April 15, 2014 by Bob EddyApril 21, 2025

The Unitarian Universalist Association’s General Assembly three years ago adopted “by more than two thirds votes of the delegates voting” a statement on war and peace. I compare this statement – with which I agree – with a statement made by the assembly of Unitarian Churches in 1917, supporting “the war to end all wars” and denouncing ministers who refused to concur. The last Unitarian to serve as President of the United states, chaired that meeting. I also explore briefly Civil Resistance as an alternative to war.
