EINSTEIN: His Life and Universe: Review

The Rev. Robert Eddy Posted on November 15, 2013 by Bob EddyApril 21, 2025

Einstein considered this feeling of reverence, this cosmic religion, to be the wellspring of all true art and science. It was what guided him. ‘When I am judging a theory,’ he said, ‘I ask myself whether , if I were God, I would have arranged the world in such a way.’ It is also what graced him with his beautiful mix of confidence and awe.
He was a loner with an intimate bond to humanity, a rebel who was suffused with reverence. And thus it was that an an imaginative, impertinent patent clerk became the mind reader of the creator of the cosmos, the locksmith of the mysteries of the atom and the universe.”

YOU’VE GOT ANSWERS? I’VE GOT QUESTIONS !

The Rev. Robert Eddy Posted on September 25, 2010 by Bob EddyApril 21, 2025

There is no “really real” there are only useful and non useful metaphors, models and maps! That’s frightful to nearly everybody: No firm ground to stand upon, nothing; It’s just metaphors all the way down; nothing, nada, zilch.

Can you live with that? Can you live with the conviction that “there is no ‘there’ out there?” I can and many others have since Job first recognized that we humans cannot know the purposes – if any – of the putative creator and sustainer of the universe. We are like the flea on a dog trying to understand the dog. Or better yet the fleas’ fleas. Or the fleas’ fleas’ fleas. Remember the old verse,

“Dogs have fleas,

and fleas have fleas,

upon their backs to bite them.

And they in turn have smaller fleas

And so ad infinitum.”

“Ad infinitum” meaning without end.

I tell you friends, it’s not fleas, or turtles or subatomic particles, it’s metaphors, models and maps all the way down.

EDED 100305 “As a man is, So he sees.”

The Rev. Robert Eddy Posted on July 5, 2010 by Bob EddyApril 21, 2025

The saying, ” As a man is, so he thinks” is attributed to William Blake on the 2006 Zen Calendar (May 27th)  but a google search indicates it was formulated by Josiah Royce in 1882.  Royce, – in his own … Continue reading →

Review: Einstein’s God* by Krista Tippett

The Rev. Robert Eddy Posted on July 5, 2010 by Bob EddyApril 21, 2025

Krista Tippett’s second book is not exactly a collection of transcripts from her weekly PBS program “Speaking of Faith.”  It’s better than that.   The introductory essay which begins, “The science-religion ‘ dabate’ is unwinnable, and it has led us … Continue reading →

APATHEISM? by Davidson Loehr

The Rev. Robert Eddy Posted on June 16, 2010 by Bob EddyApril 21, 2025

Between strident theism and equally strident atheism, apatheism offers a third way. Maybe there are gods, maybe there aren’t; it doesn’t seem to matter. Both the roots and fruits of a good life are measured by laughter among friends, love among families, and serving compassionate values that can grant us, as the gods used to do a purposeful and satisfying life—here and now, rather than elsewhere and later.

The Last Pagan: Julian the Apostate and the Death of the Ancient World. “Anyone thinking that the fourth-century BCE was a long time ago is both right and wrong. Right in that 1,700 years is a long time in human history, but wrong in that certain religious and cultural controversies of that era have loud echoes in our own.”
